Rare PAIR (c1890) Straits Chinese/Peranakan ANTIQUE Solid Silver Pillow Ends Buntal Plates

A pair of rare genuine Straits Chinese/Peranakan solid sterling silver antique bolster or pillow ends.
They were used by the Straits Chinese as part of the wedding rituals, the plates would have been sewn on both ends of a bolster. The use of bolster plates was adopted from the local Malays as such plates were not used in China.
They are profusely decorated with Chinese motifs and the 'Eight Taoist emblems' - These are the objects carried by the 8 immortals in Taoism, objects such as the flower basket of Lan Caihe, fish drum of Zhang Guo and castanets of Cao Guojiu; each tied to fluttering ribbons. Together they convey the message of blessing and longevity to the married couple. Taoism was and still is the main religion of the Straits Chinese of Malaysia and Singapore.
They are in excellent condition and quality.
The silver tested and it is of sterling grade purity. Each has a tiny Chinese silver chop mark.
Free from personal inscriptions or monograms.
