This is a late 19th-century (1899) Victorian sterling silver antique cigarette or trinket box.
Made by the sought after maker Sampson Mordan.
Cube form, with rounded corners. Very plain minimalist design.
A hinged lid with a thumbpiece, made of one heavy piece of solid silver, the internal face with gold wash finish.
Cedar wood lined interior.
The stylised inscriptions give an added interest.
Fully hallmarked on the lid and the body.
The quality braced hinges prevent the lid from over stretching and keep it at 90°.
HALLMARKS: London, SILVER fineness 925. MAKER Sampson Mordan & Co.
DIMENSION: 10cm x 8.2cm (4" x 3 1/4"). Height: 5cm (2"). approx.
CONDITION: Age-related wear and dents. A dent near the top left of the inscription. Minor tarnish that will polish off nicely. The lid closes down but leaves a tiny 1mm gap. The interior wood has some wear.
