EARLY GEORGE III SILVER BASTING SPOON
This is a rare 18th-century (1771) Georgian solid sterling silver basting.
Old English pattern stem - the terminal turned down.
A well proportioned spoon. The bowl measures 9cm x 5cm (3 1/2" x 2") approx.
No monogram, crested with what looks like a lion's head.
A relatively large basting spoon at 12" long.
HALLMARKS: London, STERLING fineness 92.5%
DIMENSION: 30.8cm (12") long approx.
CONDITION: Good condition for its age without damage. Some hallmarks obscured and appear squeezed, this is caused by the practice of re-hammering the mid stem back to shape if any distortion occured from the stamping of hallmarks on the delicate part of the handle. This practice is common amongst 18th-century silversmiths. The practice became obsolete after the position of the hallmarks moved to the top of stem towards the later part of the 18th-century.
