This is an early 19th-century Sheffield sterling silver & mother of pearl folding knife.
Beautiful carved real mother of pearl panels on both sides.
Sturdy hinge+spring, the blade latches on at 90° and then 180° and gives a strong snap when being closed.
The blade still has a good thickness of silver and heavy gauge - not flimsy.
A relatively large penknife.
It has an interesting William IV duty mark with the date letter for 1839 although the king died two years earlier.
HALLMARKS: Sheffield, STERLING fineness 92.5%. MAKER Atkin & Oxley
DATE: 1839
DIMENSION: Length : CLOSED 7.9cm (3 1/16"). OPEN 14.3cm (5 5/8") approx.
WEIGHT: 20g
CONDITION: Good condition for its age. No splits to the mother of pearl panels. The streaks on the panels are reflections and natural textures, not cracks. Minor wear to the tip of blade.
